Albrecht Dürer

A long time ago, like back in the '90s, I lived in a place where art was valued and talked about. Although going to a gallery was often hit or miss as far as talent went, I still went and enjoyed myself. Something else that I discovered was people had a lot of books about artists that I had never heard of or, if I recognized their work, I didn't know their name. Shows you how "good" my art history class with Mary Phillips was. But I digress. I developed a habit of going to used bookstores every weekend to see what treasures happened to be floating out there. The smell of old books in an old house turned shop was calming to me. One Saturday afternoon, I happened upon a book that I ended up purchasing at whatever cost. It was a book of the works of Albrecht Dürer. This was one of those instances where I knew the work but didn't know the artist. I certainly do now! While his paintings are fairly typical of the era, early 1500's, his woodcuts and engravings are something of wonder. His attention to detail is magnificent. His subject matters are sometimes esoteric and mythical and sometimes practical and observant. Like all of the artists before him, there are pieces of his work that are simply practice drawings. His practicing is still far better than my finished works! In the gallery below, I've included some of his famous works, some paintings, woodcuts, engravings, and sketches so show you the range of his talent. There are plenty of other images on the interwebs so, if you like this, seek out some more. Or, if you're lucky, you can find a book while you're snooping through an old bookstore.
