Dogfish Head Midas Touch
I had heard of Dogfish Head beers, but I had always lived in places where it wasn't distributed. Finally, Dogfish made it to Oklahoma the same time as I was living here. I got to try all of the brews that came into the state and one of my favorites was Midas Touch. It was the first beer in their Ancient Ales series. If you don't know about it, follow the link at the bottom and check it out. It's a wonderful exploration of beer recipes throughout the ages. For example, this beer's recipe was found in the tomb of King Midas. It wasn't written down, but they had the ingredients in a vessel that they discovered. With that information, the brewery's owner and creative genius, Sam Calagione, created this fantastic beer. The thing that everyone says is that it is like a cross between beer, mead, and wine. What I got out of it was more of a light colored, dense flavored beer. There are definitely hints of honey in the mix which, surprisingly, doesn't add any sweetness to the beer, just the flavor. Since I've had quite a few meads, I can't make the leap that this beer tastes like a grog (mead and beer). What I can attest to is this beer is incredibly delicious. You can also have a few of them without getting bogged down by a heaviness you might think is there by its description. A lot of effort went into the creation of this beer. Take some time and enjoy one! For more stories about their Ancient Ale Series and other beers, go see www.dogfish.com.
