Artist of the Month for February/March:
Mitch Brookman
I've spent a lot of hours snooping around the internet looking for interesting artists that I can share with you. Every once in awhile, when I'm not looking for new art, I find great new art. I'm sure things like that happen to a lot of people. "I gave up looking for a dining room table, then I was driving by an estate sale...etc. etc." Recently, I became internet friends with a guy named Mitch Brookman. Also recently, I was looking for a new artist of the month. Worlds collide and it turns out that Mitch is an artist. A good artist. A good artist that is working in a medium that I have seen very little of in my endless search for great art. He is a mosaicist. Put simply, he makes pictures with small colored pieces of tile, glass, and whatnot. Mitch studied art in San Francisco then moved to the capital of Texas where he lives and creates a lot of the time. He also keeps a house in Hanoi, Vietnam which you will see influences some of his artwork. His tile work is something to behold. You can tell by the intricacies that each piece is painstaking work. Although I'm highlighting his mosaic work first, I also included some of his oil paintings further down the page. They are just as grand. His oil paintings have a similar feel to his mosaic work in that there are bold swatches of color, but they are more free-form and impressionistic. Similar but different. You can see for yourself in the photos below. Mitch's work is in the hands of some celebs whom he has immortalized in mosaic form. I included a collage of them that Mitch put together. I love his work and I hope you do too.
