The Interrupters – Say It Out Loud
Recently, I went to Dallas to check out the Van’s Warped Tour at the Gexa Energy Pavilion. I had been to a Warped in Mountain View, California, but I had never been to see it in Dallas. I have to say, it was a spectacular event. If the food and drinks weren’t so expensive, it would have been a perfect day. One thing that I noticed from previous Tours was the resurgence of good old fashioned Ska and Punk music. One of the bands that I was fortunate enough to see was a new-to-me band named The Interrupters.
Hailing from Los Angeles, y’know, the California one, this band started my day off with a bang. We arrived at the Pavilion and the first thing I did was scoped out where my pale ass could hide from the sun when I needed to. Under the canopy of a giant amphitheater, I knew I had a refuge that also had entertainment on two small stages. I sat through a few bands and decided I would go see what the rest of the complex had to offer. Then I saw a band on the Poseidon stage getting ready to play. The guys had white button up shirts and skinny black ties. In my head I thought, “That would be cool if they were a ska band.” I stood up to leave as they punched the opening chords of a full-on skank ‘til you drop ska tune. I immediately moved closer to get a better view. Out onto the stage sprang their lead singer who happened to be a lovely woman with a great voice. I checked my $2 schedule and discovered that this was The Interrupters. The energy of the opening day of Warped, along with the energy that I’m sure this band always has during a show, made me ever so glad I drove over five hours to get to this event. As I sat there listening, I couldn’t help but miss Save Ferris because The Interrupters reminded me of them a whole lot. Every band at Warped has about thirty minutes to get in as many songs as they can and The Interrupters were no different. At one point, the guitarist mentioned that he wished they had timed this better and went on to decide they would do two more songs. They rapid fired two frantic songs to end their set on a high note. For me, it was a super high note. They thanked everyone and said when they were going to be at their merchandise tent. I waited around and went over to see them. I bought their newest CD titled “Say It Out Loud” which happened to be released that very same day. I eagerly opened it and looked it over. As I was standing there, one of the guys in the band noticed my Californication t-shirt and said he was a huge fan of that show. Me too! I didn’t stick around to get my CD signed because I could feel the sun’s rage on my poor white skin. I did witness how great they were with everyone that showed up to the meet and greet. What a thrill to see a band of great musicians who are also nice and appreciative.
I eventually got to listen to “Say It Out Loud” and it is everything I hoped it would be. Aces! Every song made my head bob and my butt wiggle to the beat. The album is full of fantastic punky ska-ness. To finish the album, they have an anthem that still rings in my ears and reminds me of a good old punch drunk Dropkick Murphys tune. It’s called "Loyal" and it will rock your face off. “We stand together. We stand by our crew.” Hell yeah, we do! Terrific record.
Thanks to Kevin Lyman and his crew for the great line up at this year’s Warped Tour. I have definitely found a couple of bands that I will be following from now on. One of them for sure is The Interrupters. Go to them and love them at http://www.wearetheinterrupters.com/ and www.facebook.com/wearetheinterrupters
