Vadim Dolgov

For about three months, I have been searching off and on for a new Artist of the Month. I have also been knee deep in writing a screenplay, writing a full length play, a short children's play, and running a liquor store for some friends of mine. In all that time, I couldn't find an artist that I liked well enough to make my AotM. I thought for sure that the internet would produce my new favorite painter, photographer, sculptor, architect, or digital wonder. Alas, I couldn't find one. To be honest, I gave up after so much looking. But I didn't lose heart. I knew someone was out there. And I found him.
Vadim Dolgov is a Russian born artist living and working in Toronto, one of my favorite cities. Vadim's artwork is interesting to me because, from viewing his website, I can see that he chose to learn the history of painting before he found his own unique style. That takes dedication and courage in a world that wants to be instantly great and famous. I respect that more than you can imagine. In the works below, you can see traces of old masters, impressionists, and his own work. His art that honors the past works of masters before him is great, but his originals are what caught my eye and make me love him. These newer pieces are chaotic on first view. They are fragmented and messy. That alone is interesting to me. However, when you look closely, there are fine contours, subtle lines, and deep humanity. The subjects of his paintings are almost buried within the chaos. The result is simplicity and calmness in a brash world. I like to think that a lot of us deal with that feeling every day. I, for one, am constantly trying to stay calm amid the chaotic world of which I find myself all the time. Vadim's paintings relay that in such a fantastic way that they speak to me on my level. I enjoy looking at each piece for awhile to see the play between hard lines and stark colors and soft lines and muted tones. These are truly incredible works. I hope you like them as much as I do.
